Changing the backdrop of a video chat

You can change the video effect or backdrop of a video chat—for example, you can change your image to a cartoon, or make it look like you’re at the beach or in Paris.

Note: The video effects and custom backdrops feature is available only on computers that meet certain requirements.

Requirements for video effects and backdrops

To change the backdrop:

Step 1

Choose iChat > Preferences, and click Audio/Video.

The video window shows your image, including your current surroundings.

Step 2

Choose Video > Show Video Effects.

Step 3

In the Video Effects window, click the arrows to cycle through the video and backdrop effects.

To add your own backdrop, click the arrows until you see frames labeled “User Backdrop,” and then drag a QuickTime movie or an image into one of the frames.

Step 4

Select the backdrop you want to use.

A message appears asking you to step out of the frame. After a moment the new background appears, and you can step back in.

Step 5

Start a video chat with up to three buddies.

Step 6

To return to your normal surroundings, click the Original backdrop in the Video Effects window, or close the video window.

To check your computer’s capabilities, choose Video > Connection Doctor, and then choose Capabilities from the Show pop-up menu.
