Using a Jabber account in iChat
Jabber is an open-source instant messaging platform that uses open, XML-based protocols to create the standard functionality people expect of an instant messaging system, such as one-to-one chat, multiuser chat, the ability to subscribe to someone else's presence.
In order to use Jabber, you need a set up an account with a Jabber server. This is similar to setting up an account with an ISP or configuring your email client to connect to your organization's email server. The Jabber server that is best for you depends on your needs (for instance, you may be using your organization's own Jabber server).
You cannot create a Jabber account using iChat. Your Jabber account needs to be set up and registered on a Jabber server, and you need a valid Jabber ID to enter in iChat.
To enter a Jabber ID in iChat:
- Open iChat preferences and click Accounts.
- Click the Add (+) button and select Add Jabber Account.
- Type your Jabber ID and password for the Jabber server for your account.
