Working with passwords

You can choose to have Mail ask you for your password each time you check messages, depending on your security needs.

To use your Mail account password:

Step 1

Choose Mail > Preferences, click Accounts, and then click Account Information.

Step 2

Use the Password field to indicate how you want to use your password:

To check messages without first having to provide your password, enter your password.

To be asked to provide your password each time you check messages, leave the Password field blank.

Normally, Mail automatically stores your email passwords in your Mac OS X keychain. If your keychain is locked, you’ll be asked for your keychain password in order to retrieve the passwords when they are needed.
