Saving copies of email you send

Mail automatically saves copies of messages you send. You can also save copies by having outgoing mail messages appear in your Inbox alongside new mail. For IMAP accounts, you can change where to store sent messages.

For IMAP accounts:

  • To have Mail store copies of messages you send on your mail server, choose Mail > Preferences, click Accounts, and select an account. Click Mailbox Behaviors and select "Store sent messages on the server." If this option is not selected, sent messages are stored on your computer and you won't be able to see them if you check your mail from another computer.
  • To have Mail store copies of sent messages in a different mailbox on the server, select a server-based mailbox from the list of mailboxes and choose Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For > Sent.

For any account:

  • To have copies of your outgoing mail messages appear alongside new email in your Inbox, include your email address in the Cc (carbon copy) or Bcc (blind carbon copy) address field when you send the message. Choose Bcc if you don't want the recipient to know you are sending yourself a copy. To automatically include yourself in the Bcc or Cc field of all messages, choose Mail > Preferences and click Composing. In the Composing section, choose Bcc or Cc from the pop-up menu and select the "Automatically Bcc (or Cc) myself" checkbox.
  • Messages you're composing are automatically saved as drafts. You can also click the Save As Draft button in the toolbar of the message window to save messages you are not ready to send. When you send the messages, they are removed from the Drafts mailbox.
