Mac OS X 10.4 Help
Changing the background of your screen
The background of your screen is part of the desktop (where you work with icons, windows, and applications). You can change the background to one of the patterns, colors, or pictures that come with Mac OS X, or you can choose your own picture.
- Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Desktop & Screen Saver.
- Click Desktop, and then select a collection of images from the list on the left.
- Click a picture on the right that you want to use as your background.
- To have the desktop picture change on a regular basis or at certain times, select the "Change picture" checkbox and choose a time from the pop-up menu. This may affect the performance of some applications, such as games, that use a lot of graphics.
Several collections come with Mac OS X. You can also look for images in your Pictures folder or select Choose Folder to locate a picture in another location.
You can also change the background by pressing the Control key and clicking the desktop, then choosing Change Desktop Background from the shortcut menu.
If you can't see your pictures you may need to save them in another format (for example, JPEG, TIFF, or PICT) using an application such as Preview (in your Applications folder).
