Preventing certain locations from being searched

Use Spotlight's privacy settings to prevent selected folders and disks from being included in Spotlight searches.

To apply privacy settings to a folder or disk:

  1. Open System Preferences and click Spotlight.
  2. Click Privacy.
  3. Drag folders or disks to add them to the Privacy list, or click the Add (+) button to browse for an item.
  4. To remove an item, select it and click Delete (-).

Adding a location to the Privacy list prevents any application that uses Spotlight from searching there, including Mail and the Finder.
