Hiding windows

When you work with multiple applications or documents, windows sometimes overlap and make it difficult to see your desktop or other items. You can hide individual windows or entire applications instead of closing them.

  • To hide individual windows, click the minimize (-) button in the upper left corner.
  • To hide all open windows in an application (including any toolbars or panels), choose the Hide command from the application menu.
  • To hide everything except the current application, choose Hide Others from the application window.
  • Press F11 to use Exposé to temporarily move all windows aside and reveal your desktop.

You can customize action keys for Exposé. Click the link below to learn more.

To reveal hidden applications, click the application's icon in the Dock or choose Show All from any application menu.

To reveal minimized windows, click the window's icon in the Dock.

You may be able to minimize a window to the Dock by double-clicking its title bar. You can control whether this happens by opening Appearance preferences and using the "Minimize when double clicking a window title bar" option.
