Mac OS X 10.4 Help
The computer I want to connect to doesn’t appear in the Network browser
There are several reasons why you may not see a shared computer or file server in the Finder's Network browser. Here are some things to check.
- If the computer is available as a Bonjour computer or as a Windows (SMB/CIFS) server, make sure it's on the same local network or subnetwork as your computer.
- The computer is not available currently. For example, it may be offline or shut down.
- The computer has the Internet Connection Firewall turned on.
- Make sure your connection to the network is working. Open Network preferences to check the status of your connection.
- Make sure you are looking for the correct name. The name appearing in the Network browser may not be the same as the computer name. If your network provides DNS services, you may see the DNS name for the computer. Depending on how DNS services are set up, you may see IP addresses, such as “dhcp192.168.10.12.” You may also see generic host names, such as “h2n1079p2”.
Note: If the computer is not on your local network or subnetwork, you can connect to it by typing its address using the Connect To Server dialog.
Contact your network administrator for assistance with problems using your network or network servers.
