Connecting to a Virtual Private Network

You can use Internet Connect to connect to a virtual private network (VPN) using PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol) or "L2TP over IPSec" (Layer Two Tunneling Protocol) on an existing Internet connection.

For help setting up a VPN connection, click the link below.

PPTP allows corporations to extend their own corporate network through private "tunnels" over the public Internet.

L2TP is an extension of the Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol used by Internet service providers to enable a VPN over the Internet.

IPSec (Internet Protocol Security) is a set of security protocols.

To connect to a VPN:

  1. Open Internet Connect, located in the Applications folder.
  2. Click the VPN icon in the toolbar.
  3. Choose the type of VPN connection, either "L2TP over IPSec" or PPTP.
  4. Choose a configuration from the Connect pop-up menu, then click Connect.
  5. To create a second VPN configuration, choose File > New VPN Connection.
