About ATI Video Software Update 1.0

The files included in this update provide improved 2D and 3D acceleration for computers with the ATI RAGE 128 graphic accelerator card or on-board ATI RAGE Pro graphic accelerator chip shipping in some iMac, PowerBook G3, Power Macintosh G3 and Macintosh Server G3 computers.

What is the ATI Video Software Update 1.0?

The drivers included with the ATi Video Software Update 1.0 are:

  • ATI 3D Accelerator v.4.6.2
  • ATI Driver Update v.1.4.8
  • ATI Graphics Accelerator v.3.9.7
  • ATI MPP Manager v.1.2f1
  • ATI Rage 128 3D Accelerator v.5.3.3
  • ATI Resource Manager v.1.2.4
  • ATI Video Accelerator v.4.2.2
  • ATI Video Accelerator Update v.1.0.2
  • iMac ATI Driver v.1.0

These changes correct the following issues:
  • A "freeze" when using computers with high processor speeds (greater than 400 MHz) and high screen resolution (1280 by 1024) after heavily using offscreen graphics memory.
  • A crash when millions of colors are used with a high resolution monitor.

To take advantage of these improvements, you will need the following:

Hardware
  • Power Macintosh G3 or Macintosh Server G3 computers with an ATI RAGE 128 graphic accelerator card or ATI RAGE Pro graphic accelerator chip
  • iMac computers with ATI RAGE Pro graphic accelerator chip
  • PowerBook G3 computers with ATI RAGE Pro graphic accelerator chip

Software
  • Mac OS 8.6

How to tell which Graphic Acclerator Card/Chip is installed?

You can check to see which graphic accelerator card or chip is installed in your computer by launching Apple System Profiler which is usually pre-installed by Mac OS under the Apple Menu. If you do not have Apple System Profiler installed on your computer, you may download it from the Apple Downloads page at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/.

Launch Apple System Profiler. Click the "Devices and Volumes" tab. Click the triangle next to Display card in the PCI section of the window. The type of graphic accelerator card or chip should be listed in the Card name field as either "ATY, RageLTPro", "ATY, RagePro" or "ATY, Rage128".

Editor's Note: In determining if this update is needed, using Apple System Profiler 2.2 or later, the type of graphic accelerator card or chip listed in the Card name field can be "ATY, RageLTPro", "ATY, mach64_3DUPro", "ATY, RagePro" or "ATY, Rage128", not just the two listed in the paragraph above.
