Newton Fax Modem: Description
This article describes the External Newton Fax Modem.
The External Newton Fax Modem is an external 2400 baud data/9600 baud send fax/4800 receive fax modem for the Newton MessagePad.
The data modem is Hayes AT command set compatible. The fax modem conforms to a Group 3 standard.
Domestic and International Models
---------------------------------
There are two models: A U.S./Canada/Japan model and an European model.
The U.S/Canada/Japan model has a RJ-ll plug built into the modem.
The European model has a country-specific cable with a male RJ-11 plug on one end and the appropriate country telephone connector on the other. The data access arrangement (DAA) pods which are typically seen on other Apple modems are integrated into this cable.
Power
-----
The Newton External Fax Modem is powered by two AA batteries or by a Newton power adapter. The adapter is plugged into the fax modem, so the fax modem never draws power from the Newton MessagePad.
Features
--------
The Newton OS has built-in send fax software that allows you to personalize cover sheets to include your name, phone and fax numbers, notes, and destination information.
From your Newton, you can control the modem sound volume, the time for the modem to wait for another fax machine to answer, and the time to wait for a dial tone. You can also select between pulse or tone dialing.
Dialing options allows the user to set the area code, prefix (to get an outside line in a PBX phone system), access code for a long-distance carrier, and your credit-card number.
Newton OS 2.x includes receive fax capabilities. The in/out box contains an integrated fax viewer, which provides zoom in/out views, rotate, and printing.
