This document contains last-minute information about "iPod Software 1.3 Updater."

Changes since 1.2:

  • iTunes 4 support, including playback of AAC encoded audio files
  • Audio playback and user interface improvements
  • Increased playback time on scroll-wheel iPods
  • Longer stand-by time for all iPods
  • iPod users with any version prior to 1.3 should upgrade to 1.3.
  • iPod Software 1.3 is compatible with touch-wheel and scroll-wheel iPods without a dock connector.

The iPod Updater has two functions, update and restore.

Update

The update command downloads new software to an iPod. The update command may be disabled if the iPod does not need to be updated because it already has up-to-date software.

Restore

The restore command returns an iPod to "factory fresh" condition. It erases and reformats the iPod before downloading new software. WARNING: The restore command erases all of the music and other data currently on the iPod.

How to use iPod Software 1.3 Updater

Follow these steps after you have downloaded the update:


    1. Double-click the file named "iPod13.smi". The iPod Software 1.3 Updater volume will appear in the Finder.

    2. Double click the iPod Software 1.3 Installer. It is called "Apple SW Install".

    3. Select your startup disk as the destination. The installer will copy the iPod Software 1.3 Updater folder to the Utilities folder.

    4. Launch the iPod Software 1.3 Updater application that was just installed in :Applications (Mac OS 9):Utilities:iPod Software 1.3 Updater:. If the iPod is not connected to the Macintosh, plug the FireWire cable into the iPod.

    5. Click on the Update button or on the Restore button. For restore you will see a message asking if you are sure you want to perform the command.

    6. After the update or restore is complete, quit the application.

    7. Unplug the FireWire cable from the iPod and then plug it back in.
